“We’re not all brown. Some fish are the color of the rainbow.”
The girl rolled away from the edge of the dock. Now she couldn’t see the fish at all. “Maybe,” she mused, “you’re not any color at all, just a reflection of the water around you.”
“We’re not mirrors, you know.”
“I wish I was a fish,” the girl said suddenly, peering down at the water below. “What color would I be, do you think?”
The fish swam in circles under the dock. Strands of the girl’s blonde hair swung like worms between the slabs of wood.
“I don’t know. Brown. Grey. Maroon.”
“You don’t think I’d be a rainbow?”
“I don’t know.”
The girl stood up, her leather sandals warm with musk. “Well. Maybe I won’t be a fish at all.”
It took a full two minutes for the fish to react and by the time he had swum to the shore it was already too late. The girl was gone, and in her absence, the moon had come.
